FAQs
Need some assistance or just want to find something? We’ve put together some handy hints and answers to some common questions just for you.
What horsepower motor should I put on my boat?
There is no one simple answer to this question. There are many factors which must be taken into account, most importantly is to never exceed the horsepower rating of the boat. Other factors to be taken into account are the weight of the boat, weight of passengers/gear, and your expected use of the boat (do you want to water ski? troll around your local lake? etc). To find the best “bang for your buck” please consult your local dealer. They will be more than happy to help you find the best outboard for your particular needs.
Can I start my engine out of the water?
No. Do not start or run your outboard engine without water circulating through the cooling water intake. Cooling water prevents the engine running dry and overheating which can damage the engine.
Are Tohatsu outboards rated for saltwater use?
Yes. All Tohatsu outboards are designed to be used in both saltwater or freshwater applications. Tohatsu outboards are used worldwide by commercial fishermen whose main application is saltwater usage. To help combat the corrosive effects of saltwater, all Tohatsu outboards are treated with a unique paint process which includes starting with marine grade aluminum alloy and then applying a high solid epoxy primer undercoat and then a high solid acrylic resin coat of paint. In addition, critical parts are made of stainless steel and all outboards include a zinc anode. As with any outboard used in saltwater, it is recommended you thoroughly flush your motor with fresh water after each use.
I accidentally connected the battery to the wrong terminals (+/-). What should I do?
We recommend you have an authorised Tohatsu dealer inspect the engine and vessel before heading back out on the water. Although there are many safeguards included in a Tohatsu engine, damage can be caused to some components.
How can I tell if my engine is still covered by warranty?
Your local authorised Tohatsu dealer can quickly and easily check your warranty coverage by using the serial number of your engine. Get in touch with your local dealer to find out more.
My boat will be out of the water for quite a while, how do I store my engine?
If you plan on not running the engine for a lengthy time, and depending on your engine model, we recommend you disconnect the battery, fuel line, any accessories, and cover the engine with a weather proof cover. We also recommend your local authorised Tohatsu dealer inspect the engine prior to re-entering the water.
What is the warranty period on parts & accessories
Genuine Tohatsu parts are covered by a limited warranty against manufacturing defects, with the warranty period dependent on usage. For specific details and warranty periods on individual parts, please contact your local authorised Tohatsu dealer.
Will modifications or accessories installed to my engine affect the warranty?
The warranty supplied with your Tohatsu engine does not apply to damage or failures caused by any non-genuine parts or accessories. Engine warranty may also be voided if installation of your engine is not within Tohatsu’s guidelines. please contact your local authorised Tohatsu dealer for more information.
Can I use fuel containing ethonal in my engine?
Tohatsu recommends using non-ethanol fuels. Later model engines using fuel containing up to 10% ethanol are acceptable (please check your owners manual on your engine’s compatibility). Use of fuel containing ethanol where not compatible may void your warranty.
Can fuel containing ethanol affect my fuel tank
Fiberglass fuel tanks/containers may not be compatible with petrol containing ethanol. Some fibreglass containers, especially older ones, may lead to the resin of the container being fed into the engine, causing major damage. It’s best to check with the manufacturer to determine if it is suitable for fuel containing ethanol.
How often should maintenance on my engine be carried out?
Each Tohatsu model differs in recommended service intervals. Please check the owners guide and/or service book for recommended service intervals and works to be carried out. If unsure, contact your local authorised Tohatsu dealer.
When using in saltwater, how often should the engine be flushed?
It is recommended that the engine be flushed and cleaned after each use in salt water. This will help maintain your engine and reduce corrosion, giving you many years of service.
